Carprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) of the carbazole and propionic acid class that was previously for use in humans and animals but is now only available to veterinarians for prescribing as a supportive treatment for various conditions in animals.
General Properties and Specifications of Carprofen:
Appearance: White or almost white, crystalline powder.
Assay: 98.5% minimum.
Melting Point: 197C to 204C literature. (Other range is also reported).
Solubility: Practically insoluble in water. Freely soluble in acetone. Soluble in methanol.
Storage: Room Temperature (Recommended in a cool and dark place, <15°C).

Carprofen contains not less than 98.0 percent and not more than 102.0 percent of C15H12ClNO2 calculated on the dried basis.
Packaging and storage: Preserve in tight, light-resistant containers. Store at 25°, excursions permitted between 15° and 30°.
Labeling: Label it to indicate that it is intended for veterinary use only.
Identification:
A: Infrared Absorption.
B: The retention time of the major peak in the chromatogram of the Assay preparation corresponds to that in the chromatogram of the Standard preparation.
Loss on drying: Dry it at 105C for 2 hours: it loses not more than 0.5% of its weight.
Residue on ignition: not more than 0.1%.
Limit of acetone and methylene chloride: To pass the test. --- not more than 5000 ppm of acetone is found; and not more than 600 ppm of methylene chloride is found.

CHARACTERS

Solubility: Practically insoluble in water, freely soluble in acetone, soluble in methanol, slightly soluble in 2-propanol.
IDENTIFICATION
Infrared absorption spectrophotometry.
TESTS
Appearance of solution: The solution is clear and not more intensely coloured than reference solution. Dissolve 1.0 g in methanol and dilute to 25 mL with the same solvent.
Related substances: To pass the test by Liquid chromatography.
Heavy metals: Maximum 20 ppm.
Loss on drying: Maximum 0.5 per cent, determined on 1.000 g by drying in an oven at 105C for 2 h.
Sulfated ash: Maximum 0.1 per cent, determined on 1.0 g.
Storage: Protected from light.
Carprofen EP Grade is also manufactured as per monograph.
