Ethanol or Ethyl alcohol, is a chemical compound, a simple alcohol with the chemical formula C2H5OH. Ethanol is a volatile, flammable, colorless liquid with a slight characteristic odor. It is a the principal active ingredient found in alcoholic drinks. Ethanol is used in medical wipes and most commonly in antibacterial hand sanitizer gels as an antiseptic for its bactericidal and anti-fungal effects. It is a common solvent in industry. FDA has labeled ethanol as a Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) substance, which means that a panel of qualified experts determined that ethanol is safe to use in food products.

Ethanol (96 per cent) BP Ph Eur Grade Specifications:
Alcohol (96 per cent)

DEFINITION
Content: ethanol (C2H6O; Mr 46.07): 95.1 per cent V/V (92.6 per cent m/m) to 96.9 per cent V/V (95.2 per cent m/m) at 20C, calculated from the relative density using the alcoholimetric tables.

CHARACTERS
Appearance: Colourless, clear, volatile, flammable liquid, hygroscopic.
Solubility: Miscible with water and with methylene chloride. It burns with a blue, smokeless flame.
Boiling point: about 78C.

IDENTIFICATION
First identification A, B.
Second identification A, C, D.
A. It complies with the test for relative density.
B. Infrared absorption spectrophotometry. Comparison Ph Eur reference spectrum ethanol (96 per cent).
C. Mix 0.1 ml with 1 ml of a 10 g/l solution of potassium permanganate and 0.2 ml of dilute sulphuric acid in a test-tube. Cover immediately with a filter paper moistened with a freshly prepared solution containing 0.1 g of sodium nitroprusside and 0.5 g of piperazine hydrate in 5 ml of water. After a few minutes, an intense blue colour appears on the paper and becomes paler after 10-15 min.
D. To 0.5 ml add 5 ml of water, 2 ml of dilute sodium hydroxide solution, then slowly add 2 ml of 0.05 M iodine. A yellow precipitate is formed within 30 min.

TESTS
Appearance: It is clear and colourless when compared with water. Dilute 1.0 ml to 20 ml with water. After standing for 5 min, the dilution remains clear when compared with water.
Acidity or alkalinity: To 20 ml add 20 ml of carbon dioxide-free water and 0.1 ml of phenolphthalein solution. The solution is colourless. Add 1.0 ml of 0.01 M sodium hydroxide. The solution is pink (30 ppm, expressed as acetic acid).
