Trolamine is a mixture of alkanolamines consisting largely of triethanolamine [N(C2H4OH)3] containing some diethanolamine [NH(C2H4OH)2] and monoethanolamine [NH2(C2H4OH)]. It contains not less than 99.0 percent and not more than 107.4 percent of alkanolamines, calculated on the anhydrous basis as N(C2H4OH)3.

Identification:
A: Infrared Absorption.
B: To 1 mL add 0.1 mL of cupric sulfate: a deep blue color is produced. Add 5 mL of 1 N sodium hydroxide, and concentrate to one-third of the original volume by boiling: the blue color remains.
C: To 1 mL add 0.3 mL of cobaltous chloride: a carmine red color is produced.

Specific gravity: between 1.120 and 1.128.
Refractive index: between 1.481 and 1.486 at 20C.
Water: not more than 0.5%, a mixture of 5.0 mL of glacial acetic acid and 20 mL of methanol being used as the solvent.
Residue on ignition: not more than 0.05%.
Assay: Transfer about 2 g of Trolamine, accurately weighed, to a 300-mL conical flask. Add 75 mL of water and 2 drops of methyl red and titrate with 1 N hydrochloric acid: each mL of 1 N hydrochloric acid is equivalent to 149.2 mg of triethanolamine, expressed as N(C2H4OH)3.

DEFINITION
2,2′,2″-Nitrilotriethanol.
Content: 99.0 per cent m/m to 103.0 per cent m/m of total bases (anhydrous substance).

CHARACTERS
Appearance: Clear, viscous, colourless or slightly yellow liquid, very hygroscopic.
Solubility: Miscible with water and with ethanol (96 per cent), soluble in methylene chloride.

A. Relative density: 1.120 to 1.130.
B. Refractive index: 1.482 to 1.485.
C. Examine the chromatograms obtained in the test for related substances.
Results The principal peak in the chromatogram obtained with the test solution is similar in retention time and size to the principal peak in the chromatogram obtained with reference solution (a).
D. To 1 mL add 0.3 mL of copper sulfate solution R. A blue colour develops. Add 2.5 mL of dilute sodium hydroxide solution and heat to boiling. The blue colour remains unchanged.

TESTS
Solution S: Dissolve 12 g in water and dilute to 20 mL with the same solvent.
Appearance of solution: Solution S is clear and not more intensely coloured than reference solution B.
Related substances: To pass the test by Gas chromatography
Water: Maximum 1.0 per cent, determined on 1.000 g.
Sulfated ash: Maximum 0.1 per cent, determined on 1.0 g. Do not carry out the initial heating on a water-bath.
